For var\u00adi\u00adous strate\u00adgic rea\u00adsons, a new fuel plat\u00adform based on bio\u00admass is desired to sup\u00adple\u00adment and replace the petro\u00adle\u00adum of today. Corn-derived ethanol from fer\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion was the first move\u00adment. Addi\u00adtion\u00adal tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy is seen to be nec\u00ades\u00adsary how\u00adev\u00ader. Where can we seek the tools nec\u00ades\u00adsary to achieve ambi\u00adtious petro\u00adle\u00adum-replace\u00adment goals? Recent advances in catal\u00ady\u00adsis and bio\u00adcatal\u00ady\u00adsis hold great promise for new path\u00adways to the mass pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of next gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion hydro\u00adcar\u00adbon bio\u00adfu\u00adels: green gaso\u00adline, diesel and jet fuel from switch\u00adgrass, for\u00adest waste, and agri\u00adcul\u00adtur\u00adal residue. The poten\u00adtial advan\u00adtages of hydro\u00adcar\u00adbon pro\u00adduc\u00adtion from lig\u00adno\u00adcel\u00adlu\u00adlosic feed\u00adstocks will be dis\u00adcussed, and the newest process path\u00adways and catal\u00ady\u00adsis impacts will be out\u00adlined. Com\u00admer\u00adcial\u00adiza\u00adtion efforts will be dis\u00adcussed. Yet gaps in knowl\u00adedge still exist. Fed\u00ader\u00adal fund\u00ading oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties in hydro\u00adcar\u00adbon bio\u00adfu\u00adels will be touched on.

George joined NSF after a 33+ year career in indus\u00adtry with UOP LLC.
