Main\u00adtain\u00ading high dis\u00adper\u00adsion of pal\u00adla\u00addi\u00adum is crit\u00adi\u00adcal for Pd-based auto\u00admo\u00adtive emis\u00adsion con\u00adtrol cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, which suf\u00adfer from deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion due to sin\u00adter\u00ading at high tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adtures (\u2265 800&nbsp;\u00b0C). Here, we report direct evi\u00addence that Pd nanopar\u00adti\u00adcles (~4 nm) can redis\u00adperse into small nan\u00adoclus\u00adters after aging at 800&nbsp;\u00b0C, where severe Pd sin\u00adter\u00ading would be expect\u00aded on sup\u00adport\u00aded Pd cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. The Pd redis\u00adper\u00adsion was con\u00adfirmed by in situ, as well as ex situ, high-res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion trans\u00admis\u00adsion elec\u00adtron microscopy, and is man\u00adi\u00adfest\u00aded by the decreased CO light-off tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture. These nov\u00adel core@shell struc\u00adtures exhib\u00adit\u00aded remark\u00adable ther\u00admal sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, main\u00adtain\u00ading the par\u00adti\u00adcle size and pore struc\u00adture at very high tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adtures (800\u2013900&nbsp;\u00b0C), close to those one may encounter in three-way auto\u00admo\u00adtive emis\u00adsion con\u00adtrol appli\u00adca\u00adtions.<\/p>\n<p>Co<sub>3<\/sub>O<sub>4<\/sub>-In<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub> bina\u00adry oxide nanorods offer a path\u00adway for low-cost, effi\u00adcient diesel emis\u00adsion con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtems. The cat\u00adalyt\u00adic tests results showed that the cat\u00ada\u00adlysts were high\u00adly active for CO and propene oxi\u00adda\u00adtion, with low tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture light-off curves. The activ\u00adi\u00adty and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of these cobalt oxide cat\u00ada\u00adlysts were com\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adble to plat\u00adinum-based cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, indi\u00adcat\u00ading that they could be a poten\u00adtial sub\u00adsti\u00adtute for plat\u00adinum-based cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for diesel emis\u00adsion con\u00adtrol.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Johannes Schwank holds a Ph. D. degree in Phys\u00adi\u00adcal Chem\u00adistry from Inns\u00adbruck Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in Aus\u00adtria. He joined the fac\u00adul\u00adty at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Michi\u00adgan in 1980 where he rose through the ranks and became Full Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading in 1990. He served as Chair\u00adman of the Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Depart\u00adment from 1990 \u2013 1995, as Inter\u00adim Direc\u00adtor of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Michi\u00adgan Ener\u00adgy Insti\u00adtute 2011\/2012, and as Direc\u00adtor of EMAL (Elec\u00adtron Microbeam Analy\u00adsis Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry), a cam\u00adpus-wide user facil\u00adi\u00adty 2013\u20132015.  He is the hold\u00ader of the James and Judith Street Chair in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading and the Direc\u00adtor of REFRESCH, an inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary project that deals with food, ener\u00adgy, and water secu\u00adri\u00adty in resource\u2013constrained envi\u00adron\u00adments.<\/p>\n<p>He serves on mul\u00adti\u00adple edi\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal boards and indus\u00adtri\u00adal and aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic advi\u00adso\u00adry boards. He has co-found\u00aded a suc\u00adcess\u00adful start-up com\u00adpa\u00adny, Aker\u00advall Tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies. He is the author of more than 200 ref\u00ader\u00adeed pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtions, and holds 15 patents.
