LeClaire pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal and Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading,<br>\nUni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware<br>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">\n&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong> \u2014 Prof. Lobo\u2019s research group is inter\u00adest\u00aded in devel\u00adop\u00ading and under\u00adstand\u00ading catal\u00ady\u00adsis sys\u00adtems to enable the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion abun\u00addant, inex\u00adpen\u00adsive and\u2014when possible\u2014renewable car\u00adbon sources into feed\u00adstocks for the chem\u00adi\u00adcal indus\u00adtry. We com\u00adbine exper\u00adtise in mate\u00adri\u00adals syn\u00adthe\u00adsis, catal\u00ady\u00adsis and kinet\u00adics, and reac\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading to devel\u00adop nov\u00adel cat\u00ada\u00adlysts and cat\u00adalyt\u00adic process\u00ades that pro\u00adduce valu\u00adable prod\u00aducts.<\/p>\n<p>In the first part I will focus on C-C bond form\u00ading reac\u00adtions that are help\u00adful in the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of furans (pro\u00adduced from glu\u00adcose or xylose by dehy\u00addra\u00adtion) into valu\u00adable com\u00admod\u00adi\u00adty chem\u00adi\u00adcals. To this end we have devel\u00adoped and opti\u00admized zeo\u00adlite cat\u00ada\u00adlyst com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtions to form aro\u00admat\u00adic species out of the furans via Diels-Alder reac\u00adtions and Friedel-Craft acy\u00adla\u00adtion reac\u00adtions. We will describe efforts to pro\u00adduc\u00ading ben\u00adzoic acid and \u03b1-methyl\u00adstyrene from furans in high selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty and high yield, along with the elu\u00adci\u00adda\u00adtion of the reac\u00adtion mech\u00ada\u00adnisms of these reac\u00adtions.<\/p>\n<p>In the sec\u00adond part I will dis\u00adcuss on-going research direct\u00aded towards the devel\u00adop\u00adment of cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for the selec\u00adtive oxi\u00adda\u00adtion of methane into methanol. We will show that zeo\u00adlites can serve as hosts of tran\u00adsi\u00adtion met\u00adals oxide clus\u00adters (cop\u00adper or iron) that are anal\u00ado\u00adgous to met\u00adal oxide clus\u00adters observed in a num\u00adber of impor\u00adtant enzymes such as par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlate methane monooxy\u00adge\u00adnase (pMMO). These clus\u00adters are capa\u00adble of oxi\u00addiz\u00ading methane to methanol, car\u00adbon monox\u00adide and CO<sub>2<\/sub>. By selec\u00adtive\u00adly choos\u00ading mate\u00adri\u00adals that com\u00adpart\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adize Cu-O clus\u00adters, we have iden\u00adti\u00adfied zeo\u00adlite struc\u00adtures that are able to selec\u00adtive\u00adly oxi\u00addize methane to methanol with very high selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty in a three-step cyclic process. We will describe the poten\u00adtial and the draw\u00adbacks of trans\u00adform\u00ading such cyclic process into a cat\u00adalyt\u00adic process for methanol pro\u00adduc\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the matu\u00adri\u00adty of the field of catal\u00ady\u00adsis this talk will show that tan\u00adta\u00adliz\u00ading new oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties emerge from the dis\u00adcov\u00adery of new cat\u00ada\u00adlyst struc\u00adtures and com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtions, and from improve\u00adments in our con\u00adtrol of the com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion of met\u00adal clus\u00adters in nanoscop\u00adic envi\u00adron\u00adments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Raul F. Lobo is the Claire D. LeClaire pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of Chem\u00adi\u00adcal and Bio\u00admol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware and Direc\u00adtor of the Cen\u00adter for Cat\u00adalyt\u00adic Sci\u00adence and Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy.  His research inter\u00adests span the devel\u00adop\u00adment of nov\u00adel porous mate\u00adri\u00adals for catal\u00ady\u00adsis and sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtions, the chem\u00adistry of zeo\u00adlites, catal\u00ady\u00adsis for ener\u00adgy and the envi\u00adron\u00adment, and the sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic aspects of cat\u00ada\u00adlyst syn\u00adthe\u00adsis. He has pub\u00adlished over one hun\u00addred fifty ref\u00ader\u00adeed reports and he is co-inven\u00adtor in three US patents. He obtained his under\u00adgrad\u00adu\u00adate degree in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cos\u00adta Rica in 1989 and lat\u00ader moved to Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia to pur\u00adsue grad\u00adu\u00adate stud\u00adies in Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at Cal\u00adtech. He worked for one year at Los Alam\u00ados Nation\u00adal Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry, New Mex\u00adi\u00adco as a post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal fel\u00adlow and he start\u00aded his aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic career at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Lobo has con\u00adduct\u00aded research in the use of zeo\u00adlites for nitrogen\/oxygen sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtions, and car\u00adbon diox\u00adide sep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adtions from flue gas\u00ades. He has con\u00adtributed to the fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtals of zeo\u00adlite nucle\u00adation and crys\u00adtal growth and to the appli\u00adca\u00adtion of zeo\u00adlites for a num\u00adber of cat\u00adalyt\u00adic appli\u00adca\u00adtions.  In par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar his group research helped under\u00adstand the mech\u00ada\u00adnisms of reac\u00adtion and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of zeo\u00adlite cat\u00ada\u00adlysts used for the removal of NO<sub>x<\/sub> gas\u00ades from com\u00adbus\u00adtion exhaust, devel\u00adoped cat\u00adalyt\u00adic mate\u00adri\u00adals for the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of bio\u00admass-derived furans into com\u00admod\u00adi\u00adty aro\u00admat\u00adic mol\u00ade\u00adcules such as xylenes and ben\u00adzoic acid and dis\u00adcov\u00adered mate\u00adri\u00adals for the selec\u00adtive acti\u00adva\u00adtion of methane using cop\u00adper oxide clus\u00adters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meet\u00ading Pro\u00adgram \u2014 Feb\u00adru\u00adary 2017 Raul Lobo Claire D.
