It has been known that the tar\u00adget prod\u00aducts such as monomers for the poly\u00admer syn\u00adthe\u00adsis have com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly low\u00ader oxy\u00adgen con\u00adtent, and the method\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy for the decrease of the oxy\u00adgen con\u00adtent is more and more impor\u00adtant. One of effec\u00adtive meth\u00adods is the uti\u00adliza\u00adtion of the hydrogenol\u00ady\u00adsis of C-O bonds in the sub\u00adstrates. For exam\u00adple, C3-C6 sug\u00adar alco\u00adhols (glyc\u00aderol, ery\u00adthri\u00adtol, xyl\u00adi\u00adtol, and sor\u00adbitol) are also regard\u00aded as promis\u00ading build\u00ading blocks in the bio\u00admass refin\u00adery. If the selec\u00adtive hydrogenol\u00ady\u00adsis of the tar\u00adget C-O bond among var\u00adi\u00adous kinds of the C-O bonds is pos\u00adsi\u00adble, valu\u00adable chem\u00adi\u00adcals such as diols, mono-ols, alka\u00adnes can be pro\u00adduced from bio\u00admass in high yield. ReOx-mod\u00adi\u00adfied Ir met\u00adal cat\u00ada\u00adlyst (Ir-ReO<sub>x<\/sub>) is report\u00aded to be effec\u00adtive to the selec\u00adtive hydrogenol\u00ady\u00adsis of poly\u00adols and cyclic ethers in water sol\u00advent. Ir-ReO<sub>x<\/sub>\/SiO<sub>2<\/sub> cat\u00adalyzes the hydrogenol\u00ady\u00adsis of glyc\u00aderol to 1,3-propanediol. The hydrogenol\u00ady\u00adsis of ery\u00adthri\u00adtol over the cat\u00ada\u00adlyst pro\u00adduces 1,4- and 1,3-butanediols. The selec\u00adtive hydrogenol\u00ady\u00adsis of tetrahy\u00addro\u00adfur\u00adfuryl alco\u00adhol to 1,5-pentanediol also pro\u00adceeds using Ir-ReO<sub>x<\/sub>\/SiO<sub>2<\/sub>. In addi\u00adtion, the com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of Ir-ReO<sub>x<\/sub>\/SiO<sub>2<\/sub> with H-ZSM-5 gives n-alka\u00adnes and hexa\u00adnols from cel\u00adlu\u00adlose, sug\u00adars, and sug\u00adar alco\u00adhols in high yield with the total C-O hydrogenol\u00ady\u00adsis and with\u00adout C-C bond dis\u00adso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion and skele\u00adtal iso\u00admer\u00adiza\u00adtion. Anoth\u00ader inter\u00adest\u00ading cat\u00ada\u00adlyst is ReO<sub>x<\/sub>-Pd\/CeO<sub>2<\/sub>. The cat\u00ada\u00adlyst showed excel\u00adlent per\u00adfor\u00admance for simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous hydrodeoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion of vic\u00adi\u00adnal OH groups in var\u00adi\u00adous sub\u00adstrates. High yield (&gt;99%), turnover fre\u00adquen\u00adcy, and turnover num\u00adber were obtained in the reac\u00adtion of 1,4-anhydroerythritol to tetrahy\u00addro\u00adfu\u00adran. This cat\u00ada\u00adlyst is also applic\u00ada\u00adble to the con\u00adver\u00adsion of sug\u00adar alco\u00adhols mono-alco\u00adhols and diols are obtained in high yields from sub\u00adstrates with even and odd num\u00adbers of OH groups, respec\u00adtive\u00adly. In addi\u00adtion, ReO<sub>x<\/sub>-Au\/CeO<sub>2<\/sub> cat\u00adalyzed the con\u00adver\u00adsion of glyc\u00aderol and ery\u00adthri\u00adtol to allyl alco\u00adhol and 1,3-butadiene in high yield (91% and 81%), respec\u00adtive\u00adly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Kei\u00adichi Tomishige received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. from Grad\u00adu\u00adate School of Sci\u00adence, Depart\u00adment of Chem\u00adistry, The Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Tokyo with Prof. Y. Iwa\u00adsawa. Dur\u00ading his Ph.D. course in 1994, he moved to Grad\u00adu\u00adate School of Engi\u00adneer\u00ading, The Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Tokyo as a research asso\u00adciate and worked with Prof. K. Fuji\u00admo\u00adto. In 1998, he became a lec\u00adtur\u00ader, and then he moved to Insti\u00adtute of Mate\u00adri\u00adals Sci\u00adence, Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Tsuku\u00adba as a lec\u00adtur\u00ader in 2001. Since 2004 he has been an asso\u00adciate pro\u00adfes\u00adsor, Grad\u00adu\u00adate School of Pure and Applied Sci\u00adences, Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Tsuku\u00adba.
