\nAbstract<\/strong> \u2014 Ocean acid\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion and cli\u00admate change are expect\u00aded to be two of the most dif\u00adfi\u00adcult sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic chal\u00adlenges of the 21st cen\u00adtu\u00adry. Con\u00advert\u00ading CO2<\/sub> into valu\u00adable chem\u00adi\u00adcals and fuels is one of the most prac\u00adti\u00adcal routes for reduc\u00ading CO2<\/sub> emis\u00adsions while fos\u00adsil fuels con\u00adtin\u00adue to dom\u00adi\u00adnate the ener\u00adgy sec\u00adtor. The cat\u00adalyt\u00adic reduc\u00adtion of CO2<\/sub> by H2<\/sub> can lead to the for\u00adma\u00adtion of three types of prod\u00aducts: CO through the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reac\u00adtion, methanol via selec\u00adtive hydro\u00adgena\u00adtion, and hydro\u00adcar\u00adbons through com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of CO2<\/sub> reduc\u00adtion with Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch (FT) reac\u00adtions. In the cur\u00adrent talk we will dis\u00adcuss some of our recent results in CO2<\/sub> con\u00adver\u00adsion via both het\u00adero\u00adgen\u00ader\u00adous catal\u00ady\u00adsis and elec\u00adtro\u00adcatal\u00ady\u00adsis. Our research approach\u00ades involve the com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of DFT cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions and sur\u00adface sci\u00adence stud\u00adies over sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtal sur\u00adfaces, eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions over sup\u00adport\u00aded cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, and in-situ char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion under reac\u00adtion con\u00addi\u00adtions. We will also dis\u00adcuss chal\u00adlenges and oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties in this impor\u00adtant research field.

\nBiog\u00adra\u00adphy<\/strong> \u2014 Jing\u00adguang Chen is the Thay\u00ader Lind\u00ads\u00adley Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of chem\u00adi\u00adcal engi\u00adneer\u00ading at Colum\u00adbia Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. He received his PhD degree from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Pitts\u00adburgh and then car\u00adried out his Hum\u00adboldt post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal research in Ger\u00admany. After spend\u00ading sev\u00ader\u00adal years as a staff sci\u00aden\u00adtist at Exxon Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Research he start\u00aded his aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic career at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Delaware in 1998, and then took the roles as the direc\u00adtor of the Cen\u00adter for Cat\u00adalyt\u00adic Sci\u00adence and Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and the Claire LeClaire Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of chem\u00adi\u00adcal engi\u00adneer\u00ading. He moved to Colum\u00adbia Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in 2012. He is the co-author of 20 US patents and over 300 jour\u00adnal arti\u00adcles with over 12,000 cita\u00adtions. He received many awards, includ\u00ading the awards from the catal\u00ady\u00adsis clubs of Philadel\u00adphia (2004), New York (2008), Chica\u00adgo (2011) and Michi\u00adgan (2015).
