\nAbstract<\/strong>
\nTher\u00admo\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adver\u00adsion of bio\u00admass to ener\u00adgy, fuels and chem\u00adi\u00adcals is an attrac\u00adtive tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy for the tran\u00adsi\u00adtion from fos\u00adsil resources to a renew\u00adable-based econ\u00ado\u00admy. Cat\u00adalyt\u00adic Fast Pyrol\u00ady\u00adsis (CFP) of bio\u00admass is a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly inter\u00adest\u00ading tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy for bio\u00admass con\u00adver\u00adsion con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading the already exten\u00adsive infra\u00adstruc\u00adture for hydro\u00adcar\u00adbons pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. How\u00adev\u00ader, many chal\u00adlenges remain unsolved before the deploy\u00adment of the bio\u00admass CFP can be real\u00adized, includ\u00ading: a) char and coke for\u00adma\u00adtion, which caus\u00ades rapid cat\u00ada\u00adlyst deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion; and b) high oxy\u00adgen con\u00adtent in the bio-oil, which makes it incom\u00adpat\u00adi\u00adble with today\u2019s hydro\u00adcar\u00adbon fuels. With respect to the first chal\u00adlenge, it is imper\u00ada\u00adtive to first under\u00adstand the ori\u00adgin and the for\u00adma\u00adtion of char and coke dur\u00ading CFP. Con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading the sec\u00adond chal\u00adlenge, it is impor\u00adtant to under\u00adstand which cat\u00ada\u00adlyst prop\u00ader\u00adties can enhance the deoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion reac\u00adtions and increase the bio-oil selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty to hydro\u00adcar\u00adbons. ZSM-5 zeo\u00adlites have been rec\u00adog\u00adnized as one of the most promis\u00ading zeo\u00adlites for CFP due to their shape selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty and their deoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion abil\u00adi\u00adty. How\u00adev\u00ader, their micro\u00adp\u00adore struc\u00adture can lim\u00adit the acces\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of heavy com\u00adpounds to the active sites of their frame\u00adwork. Mod\u00adi\u00adfy\u00ading the zeo\u00adlite pore archi\u00adtec\u00adture to cre\u00adate hier\u00adar\u00adchi\u00adcal struc\u00adtures could pro\u00advide a solu\u00adtion to this chal\u00adlenge. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, the CFP process design itself (in situ or ex situ) can alter the prod\u00aduct yield and selec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty and, thus, the bio-oil qual\u00adi\u00adty. Dur\u00ading this pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion we will dis\u00adcuss how the zeo\u00adlite prop\u00ader\u00adties and loca\u00adtion with\u00adin the CFP process (in situ or ex situ) can affect the coke\/char for\u00adma\u00adtion and the deoxy\u00adgena\u00adtion reac\u00adtions for enhanced bio-oil qual\u00adi\u00adty.

She received her PhD in the field of the devel\u00adop\u00adment of new zeo\u00adlites for the decom\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion of sul\u00adfur com\u00adpounds in naph\u00adtha and the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal gaso\u00adline from the Aris\u00adto\u00adtle Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Thes\u00adsa\u00adloni\u00adki in Greece. She has served in a lead\u00ader\u00adship role with Rive Tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy, Inc. on the com\u00admer\u00adcial\u00adiza\u00adtion of a nov\u00adel zeo\u00adlite with ordered meso\u00adporous struc\u00adture for refin\u00adery appli\u00adca\u00adtions. Dr. Valla\u2019s research focus\u00ades on the mod\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of zeo\u00adlites struc\u00adture and their appli\u00adca\u00adtion in catal\u00ady\u00adsis, adsorp\u00adtion and ener\u00adgy. She is the author\/\u00adco-author of 9 papers in peer-reviewed jour\u00adnals, 1 book chap\u00adter and 2 patents. Dr. Val\u00adla is the recip\u00adi\u00adent of the Euro\u00adpean Award \u201cRUCADI, Recov\u00adery and Uti\u00adliza\u00adtion of Car\u00adbon Diox\u00adide\u201d for her study on the role of CO2 on the reform\u00ading of nat\u00adur\u00adal gas for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of methanol.
