\nAbstract<\/strong> \u2014 A sur\u00advey of exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal and the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal results con\u00adcern\u00ading the ther\u00admo\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adics and kinet\u00adics of sur\u00adface chem\u00adi\u00adcal reac\u00adtions of impor\u00adtance in late tran\u00adsi\u00adtion met\u00adal catal\u00ady\u00adsis for ener\u00adgy tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy will be pre\u00adsent\u00aded. Top\u00adics include: (1) calori\u00admet\u00adric mea\u00adsure\u00adments of the adsorp\u00adtion ener\u00adgies of small mol\u00ade\u00adcules and mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar frag\u00adments on sin\u00adgle crys\u00adtal sur\u00adfaces, and their com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson to DFT results; (2) new mea\u00adsure\u00adments of the entropies of adsor\u00adbates and the trends they fol\u00adlow, and (3) new ways to esti\u00admate pref\u00adac\u00adtors in the rate con\u00adstants for ele\u00admen\u00adtary steps in sur\u00adface reac\u00adtions. We will also dis\u00adcuss how to use these togeth\u00ader with DFT cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions and\/or ele\u00admen\u00adtary-step rate mea\u00adsure\u00adments to build micro\u00adki\u00adnet\u00adic mod\u00adels for mul\u00adti-step cat\u00adalyt\u00adic reac\u00adtions. Final\u00adly, we will dis\u00adcuss a method for ana\u00adlyz\u00ading these to quan\u00adti\u00adfy the extent to which each ele\u00admen\u00adtary step and inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adate con\u00adtrols the net rate, and describe how one can use this to define the key descrip\u00adtors that can be used for com\u00adpu\u00adta\u00adtion\u00adal search\u00ades to dis\u00adcov\u00ader bet\u00adter cat\u00ada\u00adlyst mate\u00adri\u00adals.

Adam\u00adson Award of the ACS and the ACS Award for Col\u00adloid or Sur\u00adface Chem\u00adistry, the Ger\u00adhard Ertl Lec\u00adture Award, the Robert Bur\u00adwell Award\/Lectureship of the North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Soci\u00adety, the Ipati\u00adeff Lec\u00adture\u00adship at North\u00adwest\u00adern Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty and an Alexan\u00adder von Hum\u00adboldt Research Award. He served as Chair, Chair-Elect, Vice-Chair and Trea\u00adsur\u00ader of the Col\u00adloid and Sur\u00adface Chem\u00adistry Divi\u00adsion of the ACS. He served as found\u00ading Co-Direc\u00adtor and Direc\u00adtor of the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Washington\u2019s Cen\u00adter for Nan\u00adoTech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy, and as Edi\u00adtor-in-Chief of the jour\u00adnal Sur\u00adface Sci\u00adence for ten years.
