The Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Club of Philadel\u00adphia<\/span> is pleased to announce Dr. Ros\u00adtam Madon as the recip\u00adi\u00adent of the 2012 Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Club of Philadel\u00adphia Award, in recog\u00adni\u00adtion of his out\u00adstand\u00ading con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions to the fields of Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch and flu\u00adid cat\u00adalyt\u00adic crack\u00ading cat\u00ada\u00adlysts.<\/p>\n

Ros\u00adtam obtained his PhD in chem\u00adi\u00adcal engi\u00adneer\u00ading from Stan\u00adford Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. While at Stan\u00adford, Ros\u00adtam helped devel\u00adop the Madon-Boudart cri\u00adte\u00adri\u00adon for iden\u00adti\u00adfy\u00ading mass-trans\u00adfer, heat trans\u00adfer, and poi\u00adson\u00ading effects on cat\u00adalyt\u00adic rates. The cri\u00adte\u00adri\u00adon is used today in aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic and indus\u00adtri\u00adal lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adries world\u00adwide.<\/p>\n

After post-doc\u00adtor\u00adal research at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Wis\u00adcon\u00adsin, Ros\u00adtam start\u00aded his indus\u00adtri\u00adal career at Exxon where he dis\u00adcov\u00adered the impor\u00adtance of sup\u00adport oxide struc\u00adtures in con\u00adtrol\u00adling the over\u00adall reac\u00adtion rates for Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch cat\u00adalyt\u00adic chem\u00adistry. This find\u00ading led to the devel\u00adop\u00adment of a spe\u00adcif\u00adic oxide sup\u00adport enabling Exxon\u2019s Advanced Gas Con\u00adver\u00adsion 21th (AGC21) process and cat\u00ada\u00adlysts and was cit\u00aded by Exxon\u2019s Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Research dur\u00ading its 30th Anniver\u00adsary as a key devel\u00adop\u00adment dur\u00ading that peri\u00adod. His work and col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtions on Fis\u00adch\u00ader-Trop\u00adsch cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, also led to impor\u00adtant con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions on the impact of sul\u00adfur on activ\u00adi\u00adty pat\u00adterns and mod\u00adel\u00ading chain growth reac\u00adtion path\u00adways.<\/p>\n

In 1986, Ros\u00adtam tran\u00adsi\u00adtioned to Engel\u00adhard (now BASF) and began to focus on flu\u00adid cat\u00adalyt\u00adic crack\u00ading (FCC) cat\u00ada\u00adlysts. His study of FCC cat\u00ada\u00adlysts has led to many impor\u00adtant insights. In par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar, Ros\u00adtam led the devel\u00adop\u00adment of the Redux\u00adion-Max\u00adol\u00ae suite of cat\u00ada\u00adlysts which were the result of under\u00adstand\u00ading the inter\u00adplay between of the matrix and zeo\u00adlite Y and have been used in over 100 refiner\u00adies world\u00adwide. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, he explained the role of ZSM-5 as a co-cat\u00ada\u00adlyst in FCC units and the role of rare earth oxides in increas\u00ading the rates of hydride trans\u00adfer dur\u00ading hydro\u00adcar\u00adbon crack\u00ading reac\u00adtions. Ros\u00adtam has authored 43 tech\u00adni\u00adcal papers and been award\u00aded 9 US patents. Addi\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly in 2009, Ros\u00adtam was award\u00aded the AIChE Catal\u00ady\u00adsis and Reac\u00adtion Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Prac\u00adtice Award.<\/p>\n
