\nThe catal\u00ady\u00adsis club of Philadel\u00adphia is pleased to announce Dr. Chuck Coe as the recip\u00adi\u00adent of the 2010 Catal\u00ady\u00adsis Club of Philadel\u00adphia Award, in recog\u00adni\u00adtion of his out\u00adstand\u00ading con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion to adsorp\u00adtion sci\u00adence, catal\u00ady\u00adsis, and appli\u00adca\u00adtions of cat\u00ada\u00adlysts for organ\u00adic syn\u00adthe\u00adses.<\/p>\n
Chuck joined the Chem\u00adi\u00adcal Addi\u00adtives divi\u00adsion of Air Prod\u00aducts and Chem\u00adi\u00adcals after he obtained his PhD in inor\u00adgan\u00adic chem\u00adistry from Carnegie Mel\u00adlon Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. While at Air Prod\u00aducts, Chuck devel\u00adoped a com\u00admer\u00adcial cat\u00ada\u00adlyst for accel\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading the cure of poly\u00adester sheet mold\u00aded plas\u00adtics. This prod\u00aduct is still being sold some 30 years lat\u00ader. Ear\u00adly in Chuck\u2019s career, he trans\u00adferred to the Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate research group at the Com\u00adpa\u00adny head\u00adquar\u00adters and devel\u00adoped an exten\u00adsive exper\u00adtise in mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar sieve sci\u00adence, allow\u00ading him to con\u00adtribute to a num\u00adber of impor\u00adtant suc\u00adcess\u00adful com\u00admer\u00adcial\u00adly improved prod\u00aducts and process offer\u00adings. For many years, he teamed with project lead\u00aders across busi\u00adness units to enable the devel\u00adop\u00adment of improved adsor\u00adbents and cat\u00ada\u00adlysts based on build\u00ading structure\/property rela\u00adtion\u00adships tar\u00adget\u00aded ini\u00adtial\u00adly at spe\u00adcif\u00adic appli\u00adca\u00adtions. He led the team that cre\u00adat\u00aded improved adsor\u00adbents for the non-cryo\u00adgenic pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of oxy\u00adgen and was a major con\u00adtrib\u00adu\u00adtor to improve\u00adments in car\u00adbon mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar sieves that allowed the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of high puri\u00adty nitro\u00adgen. His great\u00adest com\u00admer\u00adcial suc\u00adcess involved the mod\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of an adsor\u00adbent used to puri\u00adfy nitro\u00adgen tri\u00adflu\u00ado\u00adride that is used in the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of inte\u00adgrat\u00aded cir\u00adcuits.<\/p>\n
Chuck was also instru\u00admen\u00adtal in devel\u00adop\u00ading new ana\u00adlyt\u00adi\u00adcal meth\u00adods and instru\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion to obtain fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal infor\u00adma\u00adtion on small exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal sam\u00adples. In this area, his most notable accom\u00adplish\u00adment has been estab\u00adlish\u00ading an advanced high pres\u00adsure microbal\u00adance sys\u00adtem that oper\u00adates up to 100 atm in the pres\u00adence of up to 50 vol% steam that sup\u00adports car\u00adbon diox\u00adide cap\u00adture, hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, and inte\u00adgrat\u00aded fuel\/energy process\u00ades. Chuck was also a key mem\u00adber of the DOE Cen\u00adter of Excel\u00adlence on Car\u00adbon-cen\u00adtered Hydro\u00adgen Stor\u00adage Mate\u00adri\u00adals and cre\u00adat\u00aded a unique dif\u00adfer\u00aden\u00adtial vol\u00adu\u00admet\u00adric adsorp\u00adtion appa\u00adra\u00adtus for mea\u00adsur\u00ading high pres\u00adsure hydro\u00adgen isotherms on 50 mg sam\u00adples, enabling the devel\u00adop\u00adment of advanced hydro\u00adgen stor\u00adage mate\u00adri\u00adals. Before retir\u00ading from Air Prod\u00aducts, Chuck was named a strate\u00adgic tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgist for the Cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtion and pro\u00advid\u00aded inter\u00adnal con\u00adsul\u00adta\u00adtion for a broad range of mate\u00adri\u00adals char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adi\u00adza\u00adtion issues involv\u00ading cat\u00ada\u00adlysts, adsor\u00adbents, and mem\u00adbranes.
